Agrarian System Analysis And Diagnosis
Hello, My name's Malyne, a lecturer at the Royal University of Agriculture in Cambodia. Today, I would like to talk about a Methodology that calls an "Agrarian Systems Analysis and Diagnosis" This "Holistic Approach" allow to study in detail and clearly about agricultural systems. How do we call it holistic? Because this methodology tries to answer an important question which ask "why farmer do what they are doing?". To answer this question, we will mobilize other sciences contributing to answer this question. Those sciences are geography, history, agronomy science, economics science, political science which focus on policymaking, etc. These sciences will be used by researchers helping to understand and explain "why farmers do what they are doing". And we should remember that farmer's choice doesn't focus on cropping or raising animals to produce a final product but their choice is using agro-ecosystems that they own from high land, lowland, deep water land to produce the outputs that flow until the consumers. Trying to understand "why they do what they are doing?". We can say that is to find the original causes of their choice Thus, Agrarian system analysis and diagnosis there are 3 phases. The first phase is landscape reading we focus on landscape, observe on what there are in the area. The second phase is studying on history focusing on the evolution of the way that farmers use agro-ecosystems the evolution of their production systems as well as the evolution of the economic, social, political situation, which can affect on their choices of agricultural production systems. The final phase is the analysis of production systems this is the use of economics to analyze the economic efficiency of production systems that farmers are doing. Agrarian System Analysis and diagnosis's result is important for researcher scholar, policymakers for thinking again and choosing the right planning or policy to strengthen and promote the systems which are sustainable. When talking about "sustainable" it doesn't mean only high economic efficiency because they use agro-ecosystem if agro-ecosystem is damaged, they cannot produce anymore. So, it is why the result from Agrarian System Analysis and Diagnosis is very helpful for a policymaker to take a decision to promote the system which bears economic, environmental, and social sustainability.
